Many of these landscapes were started or completed after being painted plein air in and around Southern California.

The larger images are painted in the studio, but their essence came from outdoor sketches and photos.

Painting outdoors is a great challenge, I liken it to a camping expedition where one fights off inclement weather, bugs, mud and sand.

But the rewards are many; it trains your eye to examine and see the world up close in all its splendid vibrancy.
